What is an Animal Totem?
I believe that as our souls are preparing the blue print of our Earth life we receive the assistance of our beloved guides and angels. These guides help us choose our life mission and soul purpose for this lifetime and also assist us in selecting our spirit team. I believe at this time we also choose our unique birth animal totems that are to walk along our life path with us; these sacred animal totems share with us their skills, traits and characteristics that will help us along our life path. I believe, through working with my spirit guardians, that birth totems assist us with our life mission, in that they help us fulfill the specific path we have come to this lifetime to experience.
These sacred animal spirits are called our birth totems. They come with us when we are born onto the Earth, and stay with us until we go back in spirit. Each Animal Totem has unique symbology, which are reflected through traits, behaviors and skills they display, and through interaction with other animals and life in their habitat. Our birth totems share with us their unique qualities and symbolism, which influence our personality, determine how we react to the world around us, what special skills we have in this life, and what our strengths will be.
What is an Inner Totem Pole?
Each person has 9 life path or birth totems that correspond to the 9 directions (East, South, West, North, Above, Below, Within, Right and Left) and also to 8 major energy centers in our body called chakras. Each direction and each chakra represents a different learning pathway your birth totem animal assists you with.
According to Ted Andrews, "Like the totem pole, the human body is a bridge, with our feet upon the Earth and our heads in the Heavens." (Andrews, 1999). There is an undeniably strong connection to your birth totems and their symbology reflects your inner spiritual nature. If you think of how the human chakra system is set up, from head to toe, and compare that with how the native american totem poles are set up, its a very similar finding. Animals from head to toe. In the Reiki practice, there are hand placements which coincide with our chakras, so as you perform a reiki session, you are moving from chakra to chakra or energy center to energy center. When I started as a Reiki practitioner, I had the experience of seeing totem animals step forward, each time I would perform one of the Reiki hand placements, which include each major energy center on the body. As I would move down the line to another chakra center, another animal would step forward. Through time, and learning from my spirit team, I came understand that these animals that step forward are our animal totems.
Types of Animal Totems:
Birth Totems: During this course we are working with our birth totems, which as mentioned above, do not change, they come with you when you are born, they have a specific mission to help you with, and they stay.
Helper Totems: These can change throughout your lifetime. Helper totems come at certain times in your life to assist you with important left stages and changes such as school, marriage, parenting, career, hobbies, etc. An example of a helper totem: Perhaps you are going to take a reiki class and when you decide to do this a special animal help may step forward to help you with learning the required skills.
Messenger Totems: Come to bring you a specific message from the spirit realm - from your guides or members of your spirit helper team! They will keep coming until you get it too! An example of a messenger totem is any animal who appears on your path, usually in an out of the ordinary way.
Shadow Totems: These Totems Live in the shadow world, where your other totems live in the light world. Shadow totem brings forth unresolved issues for resolving. That which you fear the most is usually something you must learn to come to terms with. Shadow totems have great power for you, but will put you through tests before they will allow that power to work for you, instead of against you.
Power Totems: This is your Soul totem. This is your companion who travels with you through eternity. This Totem is by your side always as your guide and protector. Power totem will reincarnate with you again and again and is a reflection of your soul and your major attributes and abilities.
